Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Switzerland is an independent international medical humanitarian organization working in over 70 countries worldwide. MSF is recruiting the following position for its Project in Matsapha/Manzini.

TRANSLATOR / TRANSCRIBER
Duty Station: Matsapha

Level: 5

N° of positions: 1 / 100% (full time)

Main Purpose:

  • Organizing and supervising the daily supply chain activities and the teams associated, in the coordination or project level, according to MSF protocols and standards in order to ensure the optimal running of the mission.

Accountabilities:

  • Transcribe and translate field notes and of audio-recorded individual and group discussion data in MS Word .docx format, ensuring data quality, accuracy and completeness as well as protection of study participants’ confidentiality and privacy.
  • Assist as a note-taker and co-moderator, in the conduct of qualitative data generation in Manzini and Mbabane areas.
  • Ensure secured storage of all collected data according to study-specific procedures. Support the OR Social Epidemiologist and Principal Investigator(s) in accounting for cultural nuances to enhance communication and understanding.
  • Maintain confidentiality, neutrality and respect towards collaborators, study participants and MSF staff while contributing to data collection and processing activities.
  • Upholding MSF’s core principles, values, quality standards and Code of Conduct. Respecting MSF’s identification materials and not abusing their use aside from their intended purposes.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities:

  • Note-taking during qualitative encounters (e.g., group discussions), if requested by responsible for qualitative data generation.
  • Support to moderation of qualitative encounters (e.g., group discussions).
  • Verbatim transcript preparation of participants’ qualitative insights (from audio files to MS Word) and of field notes (from paper notebooks to MS Word).
  • Preparation of translation of transcripts into English from Siswati.
  • Back-translation of English transcripts into Siswati (for transcripts prepared by other research team members).
  • Archive all written, recorded, translated/transcribed documentation as per study protocol and study-specific procedures.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for the maintenance and functioning of equipment and/or supplies required to carry out the tasks requested.
  • Participate in regular daily meetings with functional and hierarchical supervisors, to report progress.
  • Timeline and field work. This qualitative study will implement contemporaneous data generation and analysis processes, implying that the above-mentioned responsibilities must be carried in the study sites as per data generation schedules set forth by the OR Social Epidemiologist.
  • The Tranlator/Transcriber will be compensated on a product delivery basis, a flat fee per key product (i.e., transcribed and translated) has been established.
  • Approximately, up to 60 encounters might be necessary. These encounters will take place during the year 2026.

Requirements (position specific):
Education

  • Higher education (health degree would be an asset)
  • Training in translating and transcribing

Experience

  • Essential at least two years’ previous working experience. Desirable in MSF or other NGOs
  • Proven understanding of MSF Field Logistics (general knowledge of MSF equipment and kits) is an asset.

Language

  • English essential. Siswati desirable.

  • Essential computer literacy (word, excel, internet)
