Duties & Responsibilities Key Responsibilities

Shuttle Coordination & Movement Assistance

  • Assist with the movement and positioning of shuttle vehicles, tractors, and haulage trucks in loading and offloading zones.
  • Notify drivers when to advance, reverse, stop, or align trailers.
  • Ensure that empty trailers are delivered to loading points timeously and that loaded trailers are dispatched without delays.
  • Help maintain orderly traffic flow in congested field areas, especially when multiple heavy machines are in operation.
  • Assist with monitoring trailer queues and communicating expected waiting times or changes in operational priorities.

Heavy Equipment Support

  • Guide operators of cane loaders, harvesters, tractors, and trucks to ensure safe alignment and positioning.
  • Monitor potential equipment conflicts and alert operators to hazards, obstacles, or personnel in the vicinity.
  • Assist during trailer swaps, hookups, and repositioning by providing signals and ensuring safe distances between machinery.

Safety, Risk Awareness & Compliance

  • Adhere to all company safety protocols, PPE requirements, and site operational rules.
  • Maintain situational awareness in high-risk areas involving heavy equipment and pedestrian interaction.
  • Report unsafe practices, near misses, damaged equipment, or environmental hazards immediately to the Supervisor.
  • Assist in placing and maintaining safety cones, warning devices, reflectors, and signage in work zones.
  • Ensure operators and drivers follow speed limits, safe stopping distances, and loadingzone rules.

Communication & Operational Coordination

  • Communicate continuously with tractor drivers, truck drivers, loader operators, and supervisors to support smooth workflow.
  • Use hand signals, or designated communication systems to guide vehicle and equipment movement.
  • Communicate changes in traffic congestion, or equipment delays.
  • Participate in daily briefings and relay operational instructions to drivers and ground personnel as needed.

Equipment Readiness & Workflow Support

  • Assist in ensuring trailers are clean, adequately positioned, and ready for loading.
  • Support operators with basic field logistics such as clearing debris, aligning equipment, or moving small obstacles.
  • Perform basic vehicle or trailer checks when required (e.g., visual inspection for punctures, loose chains, or hazards).
  • Assist with monitoring fuel levels, equipment locations, and operational readiness as directed.

Job Advert Summary The Shuttle Assistant supports safe, efficient, and continuous sugar cane harvesting and hauling operations by assisting in coordinating shuttle vehicles, tractors, haulage trucks, and
mechanical harvesting equipment. The role ensures timely movement of empty and loaded trailers between loading zones, field blocks, and mill-yard holding areas. Working closely with
operators of heavy equipment such as cane loaders, tractors, haulage trucks, grab loaders, and harvesters, the Shuttle Assistant helps maintain operational flow, communicates field
requirements, and supports safe maneuvering in tight or high-risk zones. This position is essential in preventing delays, ensuring optimal equipment utilization, and maintaining overall
safety and efficiency in the sugar cane logistics chain.
Minimum Requirements Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Educational Requirements

  • Grade 10–12 preferred.
  • Basic Safety Training, Traffic Control, or operational induction advantageous.

Experience

  • Minimum 1–2 years’ experience in logistics, agriculture, transportation, or field operations.
  • Experience in environments involving heavy equipment (agricultural, construction, mining, or transport) is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with sugar cane harvesting operations is an advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Understanding of field logistics, traffic flow, and movement of heavy machinery.
  • Use hand signals, and communication tools effectively.
  • Basic knowledge of tractor–trailer systems, haulage operations, and safety rules.
  • Ability to recognize equipment hazards and maintain safe distances.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Strong awareness, concentration, and alertness in dynamic work zones.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to follow clear instructions.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a safety-first mindset.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, physically demanding outdoor environments.
  • Team-oriented, adaptable, and calm under pressure.

Working Conditions

  • Work performed outdoors in fields, loading zones, haulage routes, and mill-yard environments.
  • Exposure to heat, dust, rain, mud, noise, and changing weather conditions.
  • Frequent proximity to moving trucks, tractors, loaders, and harvesters.
  • Extended periods of standing, walking, and navigating uneven terrain.
  • Required to wear full PPE at all times.
  • May be required to work shifts, long hours, weekends, and during peak harvest seasons.
