INTRODUCTION

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT AND SCOPE

The Global Assisted Voluntary Return (GAVR) programme aims to provide Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) to migrants ensuring that returns are safe, dignified, voluntary, and based on migrants’ free, prior, and informed consent.

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Office (HoO) and the direct supervision of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Response Officer, the Protection Assistant – Case Management will be based in Mbabane, Eswatini, and will be responsible and accountable for protection case management and assistance services for migrants.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate individual protection screening of vulnerable migrants using IOM’s standard screening tools.
  • Document and identify migrants’ needs and prepare individual case management plans.
  • Provide individualized case management support and process referrals for specialized services.
  • Coordinate case management activities with IOM Country Offices and relevant stakeholders.
  • Apply IOM protection principles while maintaining confidentiality and data protection.
  • Maintain accurate case records using IOM case management systems.
  • Compile case information and assist in preparing reports and monitoring protection-related indicators.
  • Undertake duty travel as required.
  • Attend case management and coordination meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, International Relations/Affairs, Research, Law, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with three (3) years of relevant professional experience; OR
  • High School Diploma with five (5) years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Experience in protection case management in humanitarian or migration contexts.
  • Experience working with vulnerable persons, including returnees or deported migrants.
  • Experience coordinating referrals with NGOs, government services, or protection actors.
  • Experience in movement operations is an advantage.
  • Experience with IOM or other UN agencies is preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Knowledge of IOM and Inter-agency protection standards and operational guidelines.
  • Knowledge of human rights and international migration law is an asset.
  • Knowledge of MiMOSA is a strong asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work with migrants experiencing trauma or complex needs.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and case management tools.

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
