VACANCY – FARMER DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

The National Maize Corporation (NMC) is a Category A public enterprise involved in the trading of white maize, premium rice, and sugar beans. The Corporation hereby invites suitably qualified and experienced candidates to apply for the position of Farmer Development Manager. The successful candidate will report to the Executive Manager – Farmer Development & Mechanization.

Job Summary

The Farmer Development Manager shall be responsible for informing the strategic direction and provide oversight over the NMC’s farmer development initiatives which are centered around providing training, technical advice, and guidance to local farmers to improve production and yield, encourage commercialization, and increase the proportion of NMC maize and beans coming from local farmers.

Key Performance Areas

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

a) Preparation and implementation of farmer development unit budget
b) Guide the Farmer Development Officers (FDOs), setting clear work priorities, performance expectations, and professional development plans aligned with NMC’s goals
c) Analyze market trends, assess farmer needs, and develop comprehensive strategies to increase maize and beans production through commercializing local farmers, improve farmer livelihoods, and secure a reliable grain supply for NMC
d) Build and maintain strong relationships with agriculture ministry, research institutions, extension services, and farmer associations to leverage expertise and resources for farmer development
e) Offer technical expertise and guidance to Farmer Development Officers on various aspects of grains production, including soil management, crop improvement strategies, and sustainable farming practices
f) Establish systems to track progress towards achieving farmer development goals, measure the impact of programmes, and identify areas for improvement

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy/Agricultural Economics or any other related field

• 5 years in a management role within Agriculture

• Exposure to maize and bean farming
