Position: CSSD (Central Sterile Services Department) Assistant

Reporting Structure:

This position reports directly to the Theatre Unit Manager.

Purpose of the Job:

The CSSD Assistant is responsible for the cleaning, sterilization, packing, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment to ensure the highest standards of infection control in healthcare settings.

Academic & Experience Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent (certificate in CSSD or sterile processing is an advantage).
• Prior experience in a healthcare sterilization unit is preferred.
• Knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control practices.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Added Advantage:

• Exposure to medical instruments, chemicals, and and sterilization equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Sterilization & Decontamination

• Clean, decontaminate, and sterilize surgical instruments, trays, and medical equipment following established protocols.
• Operate sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, ultrasonic washers, and disinfectors.
• Monitor sterilization cycles and ensure proper documentation of sterilization records.

2. Packing & Distribution

• Inspect instruments for damage and ensure they are in proper working condition.
• Assemble and package instrument sets following standard guidelines.
• Label and store sterilized instruments appropriately for easy retrieval and use.
• Distribute sterile supplies and equipment to relevant hospital departments.

3. Inventory & Quality Control

a. Maintain accurate records of sterile supplies and report shortages. b. Follow strict infection control procedures and adhere to hospital policies. c. Perform routine checks and maintenance of sterilization machines and report any malfunctions.

Work Environment:

• Exposure to medical instruments, chemicals, and sterilization equipment.
• Requires standing for long periods and handling heavy instrument trays.
