CAREER OPPORTUNITY: CHIEF RISK OFFICER
A career opportunity is open for a suitably qualified and well experienced individual to lead the Society’s Risk Function as Chief Risk Officer reporting to the Managing Director. The position is tenure at our Head Office, Mbabane.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
As Chief Risk Officer you will ensure the evolution of the risk function into a highly skilled unit. The incumbent will be responsible for leading the achievement of the society’s strategic objectives providing a holistic perspective and analysis of the Society’s measurement and management of its financial and non-financial risks on an ongoing basis. The role will lead the development and on-going management of the Society’s risk framework, risk appetite and in the selection of its risk management and mitigation tools and techniques.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Overall management of the Society’s risk management operations, including managing, identifying, evaluating, reporting and overseeing the Society’s internal and external risks;
- Direct collaboration with the business to ensure the transparency around both risk and risk-adjusted profitability, increased role in the review of business plans and limits and interaction with businesses in terms of how to structure/hedge/manage risk positions;
- Assessing and mitigating significant competitive, regulatory, and technological risks to the Societies capital and earnings; and
- Providing advice to the SBS senior management team on strategy risks and steering of the Society in terms of impact and management of risk exposures
Service Delivery & Customer Satisfaction
- Collaborate with the Audit & Compliance Managers to ensure effective communication with external auditors and regulators;
- Responsible for a holistic and independent view across all business functions and all risk types;
- Assists the business to develop and communicate risk management policies, risk appetite, tolerance level and risk limits on different corporate activities;
Strategic Risk Management
- Oversees the development and implementation of Risk Management Framework, Strategy, Action Plan, Policies, procedures, processes and ensure alignment with business goals & objectives;
- Oversees the efficiency and effectiveness of the Society’s Enterprise Risk Management [ERM] promoting continuous enhancement and improvement of financial, regulatory and operational controls and processes and system capabilities;
- Oversees the development and implementation of Risk Measurement Framework, Methodologies and Techniques;
Risk Identification
- Correlate identified risk scenarios to relevant business processes to assist in identifying risk ownership;
- Validate risk appetite and tolerance with senior leadership and key stakeholders to ensure alignment;
- Support management and business units in implementing the approved Risk
- Management Policies and processes, and ensure they are integrated into the business operations and with Internal Control and compliance processes
Regulatory Compliance
- Inculcate the risk management culture within the Society;
- Oversee the Implementation of Risk Management and maintenance of a Risk inventory which encapsulates all identified risks within the Society;
- Responsible for the overarching annual strategic, risk-based business plan including ERM, and regulator Risk initiatives covering financial, regulatory, compliance and operational activities;
- Monitor and ensure proper development, execution and monitoring of the Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP), and its deliberation in the Senior Management and Board Level Risk Management Committees
Business Continuity Plan [BCP]
- Develop, manage and coordinate implementation on Business Continuity Plan [BCP] in response to natural or man-made events that may lead to business interruption and/or losses to the Society;
- Provide inputs, support and liaison as required to business units on the business continuity planning process to ensure plans are up to date and relevant;
Risk Communication and Reporting
- Maintain and ensure consistency of the categorization and definitions of risks and terminologies used throughout the Society;
- Document the Risk Management / Measurement programme of the Society;
- Prepare reports on significant risks based on the Board-approved criteria for reporting and escalation of risks to management, the Risk Management Committee and the Board;
- Provide regular updates to the Committee on changes in the banking regulations and their impacts on the Society’s Risk Management System;
Risk Reports
- Champions the implementation of the risk assessment process and set up of risk registers;
- Prepare the following Risk reports:
- Monthly Risks Non-compliance Report
- Monthly Update on the Risk Register and implementation of Treatment plans
Team Development
- Hire, develop, evaluate, reward, and retain adequately qualified team of Risks professionals;
- Implement the performance management process with respect to own and subordinates;
- Foster a Performance engagement culture;
- Foster a culture of innovation, transparency and accountability in the Finance department;
- Develop, obtain approval and implement appropriate personal development plans for self and subordinates
Qualifications
- Minimum Post Graduate Degree in Risk Management /Banking equivalent
- Active participation in a Risk Management or Banking Professional Body
- MBA or Executive Development programme would be an added advantage
Experience
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in financial services or banking sector with expertise in credit management.
- At least 3 years in a leadership role
