Zakhona Mining Contractors, has vacancies of the following positions. Thus, we seek to employ qualified and competent candidates who have experience in fiery mines operations. Candidates with gold and platinum mining operations are NOT eligible for these positions. Appointed candidates will be deployed at the mine based at Tshaneni.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
ADT (ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCK) OPERATOR
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Must have at least two years’ experience operating an ADT
- Must supply proof of previous operator license
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate
- No criminal record
- Potential candidates will undergo a practical assessment as well as Dover assessment as part of the interview process
BELT ATTENDANT
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Conveyor belt experience
- At least 2 years underground experience
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate
- No criminal record
BLASTING ASSISTANT
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Must have at least two years’ experience as a Blasting Assistant
- Must supply proof of previous training and certificates
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate
- No criminal record
BOILERMAKER
ROLE PURPOSE Maintenance, fabrication and installation of steel structures on surface and underground.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Trade test certificate
- Must be able to weld
- Language proficiency in a valid certificate of fitness
- Must be willing to work in English
- Must be willing to work shifts and be available for standby duties
- Must have own reliable transport with code B drivers license
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Underground Mining Machines
- Conduct fabrication, cutting and grinding
- Conduct planned maintenance and mechanical installations
- Welding duties
- Building and Repairs of conveyors, shoots and structures
- Implementation of preventative maintenance programs
- Maintaining current structures and conveyors
- Knowledge of building and refurbishing underground mining machines
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adhere and enforce relevant safety regulations and manage legal compliance (Mine Health and Safety Act) and standards
- Excellent knowledge of equipment

COAL CUTTER OPERATOR
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Must have at least two years’ experience as Coal Cutter Operator
- Must supply proof of previous operator license
- No criminal record
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate
- Potential candidates will undergo a practical assessment as well as Dover assessments as part of the interview process
ELECTRICIAN
ROLE PURPOSE To repair and maintain all underground production machines and equipment.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Valid trade certificate
- Gas testing certificate
- Flame proof certificate
- At least 2 to 5 years underground experience as an Electrician
- Proven fault-finding ability on production equipment
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain and repair production machines in section and conveyor belt system
- Daily inspection on all machines and equipment in and around the production section
- Complete daily documentation (Job Cards, Logbook and Daily Shift Report, etc.) required by Supervisor
- Good housekeeping
FACE DRILL OPERATOR
ROLE REQUIREMENT
- Competent A or Gas Testing Certificate
- 2 Years’ experience as Face Drill Operator
- Knowledge of drilling dykes, how to drill dykes
- Potential candidates will undergo a practical assessment as part of the interview process
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate
FITTER
ROLE PURPOSE To repair and maintain all underground production machines and equipment.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Valid trade certificate
- Gas testing certificate
- Flame proof certificate
- At least 2 to 5 years underground experience as an underground Fitter and show the knowledge to repair and maintain all underground, flameproof production machines and equipment
- Must be able to obtain a valid certificate of fitness
- No criminal record
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain and sustain equipment availability and reliability
- Adhere and enforce relevant safety regulations and manage legal compliance (Mine Health and Safety Act) and standards
- Must have excellent knowledge of equipment, inclusive of hydraulic systems
- Report and present progress
- Ability to multi-task and work without supervision

FOREMAN
ROLE PURPOSE The role as Foreman will be responsible for developing daily, weekly, monthly and longer-term maintenance plans.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12
- Supervisory Qualification (Advantageous)
- Mechanical/Electrical or Millwright Trade
- Flameproof Certificate
- Gas Testing Certificate
- At least 5 years underground Imbye coal mining Engineering experience with 3 years working as Foreman
- Medium Voltage switching
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise the activities of assigned personnel in maintenance. Perform supervisory functions at the level established by management for the job
- Oversee maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, systems, installations etc. This includes obtaining necessary work permits, inspecting proper isolation of the site in accordance with such permits, ensuring proper isolation of completed work, trouble shooting complex electrical problems and checking
- Prepare drawings of modifications carried out on electrical, A/C and other systems
- In cases where the end results differ from initial drawings/specifications
- Assist with the on-the-job training of all Artisans
- Certify completion of preventive maintenance and repair work, which includes checking work carried out and signing preventive maintenance sheets and work orders
LAMPROOM ASSISTANT
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Must have Grade 12
- Must be able to work under pressure
- Must have the ability to report to Management
- Must have excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Must be computer literate, inclusive of Word and Excel
- Must be willing to work shifts
- Read, write, and communicate in English
- Must be able to perform well in a team and be self-motivated
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate
Preference will be given to applicants with:
- Previous service in a Lamproom environment
- Certificates which certify additional Lamproom training
- Previous underground experience
LAMPSMAN
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a valid lampsman certificate
- Computer literate
- Read, write, and communicate in English
- Be dependable and punctual
- Must be able to work in a team and perform under pressure
- Must be self-motivated and committed to the job and company
Preference will be given to applicants with:
- Previous service in a lamp room
- Certificates which certify additional lamp room training

MINER
ROLE PURPOSE The Miner is responsible to ensure a safe, productive and a cost-effective completion of production or construction activities.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Blasting certificate (for fiery mines)
- Competent A/Gas Testing/First Aid and Strata 2 Certificates
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate
- No criminal record
- At least 4 years’ experience as an outbye miner
- Must have pumping experience
- Must be able to work under pressure
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, implement, manage and lead Outbye areas of an underground coal mine to ensure reliability and availability of:
- Equipment and labour for production
- Material for production
- Water reticulation (pumps, pipes, seals, and underground dams)
- Ensure effective availability of underground conveyor belts
- Adhere maintenance of all conveyor infrastructure (H-frames, rollers, top frames, installation, joining and extension of conveyors and tail-ends)
- Adhere and enforce relevant safety regulations and manage legal compliance (Mine Health and Safety Act) and the COP, Standards and Procedures
- Set goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company’s plans and vision and communicate them to subordinates
- Manage and monitor members attendance and work (Good time-management skills)

ROOFBOLTER OPERATOR
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Must have at least two years’ experience as a Roofbolter Operator (RHAM)

SHAFT GUARD
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Monitor access to the underground mine shaft, ensuring only authorized personnel enter the area
- Conduct regular inspections of the mine shaft and surrounding areas for potential safety hazards
- Maintain a log of all activities, incidents, and personnel entering and exiting the mine
- Assist in emergency situations, including evacuations and first aid, if necessary
- Communicate effectively with the shift supervisor and other team members regarding any security or safety concerns
- Ensure all safety protocols and procedures are strictly followed
- Previous experience in a security or safety role, preferably within a mining environment
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to remain alert for extended periods
- Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and respond quickly to emergencies
- Basic first aid training is an advantage
SHIFTBOSS
ROLE PURPOSE The Shift boss is responsible to ensure a safe, productive and a cost-effective completion of production or construction activities in an Underground Coal mining environment.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Blasting certificate (for fiery mines)
- First Aid certificate
- Red ticket
- Flameproofing certificate
- Gas Testing certificate
- Competent A certificate
- Mine Overseer certificate for Coal Mines will be an advantage
- At least 5 years’ experience as a Shift boss (Outbye or In bye) in an underground coal mine
- Management, Planning, coordination and control of production and service activities
- Spend time as an underground coal Production Miner at least 4 years and experience on dyke development/contractor management/conveyors and water reticulation would be advantageous with conventional board and pillar mining
- Understanding and execution of Occupational Safety and Health Act requirements
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

TRACTOR OPERATOR
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Must have at least two years’ experience operating an underground Tractor

GENERAL WORKER
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- At least 2 years’ experience underground
- Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate

FOREMAN – PLANT ENGINEERING
ROLE PURPOSE To supervise the maintenance teams in the safe and structured execution of maintenance work in the plant.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12
- Supervisory Qualification (Advantageous)
- Mechanical or Millwright Trade
- Valid Medical Certificate
- Computer literacy (MS Office Suite)
- At least 5 years’ process engineering experience, of which at least 3 years must have been in a supervisory capacity
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee maintenance and repair of plant equipment, systems, installations, etc. in accordance with obtaining necessary work permits, ensuring proper isolation of work. Trouble-shooting complex mechanical problems and checking completed
- Assist with the on-the-job training of all Artisans
- Certify completion of preventive maintenance and repair work, which includes checking work carried out and signing preventive maintenance sheets and work orders
